Your Sun sign might be different

If you have always identified as an Aries, you might actually be a Pisces in the Vedic system. Here is why — and why it matters less than you think.

The precession problem

The Earth wobbles on its axis like a spinning top. This wobble, called precession, takes about 26,000 years to complete one cycle. It means the point where the Sun crosses the equator at the spring equinox slowly drifts backward through the constellations.

About 2,000 years ago, the spring equinox fell at the start of the constellation Aries. Today it falls in Pisces. That is a gap of roughly 23 degrees — almost an entire sign.

A concrete example

Say you were born on March 25. Western astrology says you are an Aries — because the Sun is past the spring equinox point.

But if you look at which constellation the Sun is actually in front of on that date, it is still in Pisces. The Sun does not enter the constellation of Aries until mid-April.

Neither system is wrong. Western astrology defines Aries by the equinox. Vedic astrology defines it by the stars. They are measuring different things.

How signs typically shift

This table shows approximate Vedic equivalents for Western Sun signs. The exact shift depends on your birth year and precise birth time — borderline dates can go either way.

But your Moon sign matters more

In Vedic astrology, the Sun sign is not your primary identifier — the Moon sign is. The Moon changes signs every 2.5 days (the Sun takes a full month), so it is a much more personal marker. Your Moon sign determines your Nakshatra, which is the starting point for your Dasha timeline — the planetary chapters of your life.

Even two people born on the same day can have very different Moon signs depending on what time they were born. This is why Vedic astrology requires your exact birth time — not just the date.

And then there is the rising sign

Your Lagna (ascendant or rising sign) is the sign on the eastern horizon at your exact moment of birth. It changes roughly every two hours, making it the most time-sensitive point in your chart. In Vedic astrology, the Lagna — not the Sun sign — defines the layout of your entire chart.
