Life chapters — the Dasha system

A 120-year planetary cycle that divides life into chapters, each governed by a different planet. Unique to Vedic astrology — nothing like it exists in Western.

What is a Dasha?

The Sanskrit word Dasha means “condition” or “period.” In Vedic astrology, your life unfolds through a sequence of planetary periods, each bringing a different set of themes, opportunities, and challenges depending on where that planet sits in your birth chart.

The most widely used system is Vimshottari Dasha — a 120-year cycle prescribed in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It assigns each of the nine planets a fixed number of years, and the order in which you experience them depends entirely on your Moon Nakshatra at birth.

The nine Mahadashas

The 120-year cycle is divided into nine major periods called Mahadashas. Each planet governs a fixed span of years:

Sun
6 years
Moon
10 years
Mars
7 years
Rahu
18 years
Jupiter
16 years
Saturn
19 years
Mercury
17 years
Ketu
7 years
Venus
20 years

Total: 6 + 10 + 7 + 18 + 16 + 19 + 17 + 7 + 20 = 120 years

How your Dasha sequence is determined

Your starting Dasha depends on which Nakshatra the Moon was in at your birth. Each of the 27 Nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine planets. The ruling planet of your birth Nakshatra becomes your first Mahadasha, and the remaining planets follow in a fixed sequence.

Because you are likely born partway through a Nakshatra cycle, your first Mahadasha will typically be a partial period. The exact remaining years are calculated from how far the Moon had progressed through its Nakshatra at your birth time.

Layers within layers

Each Mahadasha is subdivided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods), and those are further divided into Pratyantar Dashas (sub-sub-periods). This creates a three-level timing hierarchy:

Mahadasha

The major chapter. Lasts years to decades. Sets the overarching theme.

Antardasha

A sub-chapter within the major period. Lasts months to years. Adds nuance.

Pratyantar Dasha

A micro-chapter. Lasts days to months. The finest timing layer.

Why this matters for timing

The Dasha system gives Vedic astrology something Western astrology does not have: a precise, date-based framework for understanding life phases. Instead of vague statements like “you are entering a period of growth,” Dashas provide exact start and end dates for each chapter.

The quality of each Dasha depends on where its ruling planet sits in your birth chart — its sign, house, dignity, and relationships with other planets. A well-placed planet tends to bring smoother experiences during its period. A challenged planet may bring growth through effort.
