What is a birth chart?
A snapshot of the sky at your exact moment of birth — 9 planets placed across 12 houses. This map is the foundation of everything in Vedic astrology.
The basics
A Kundli (also spelled Kundali) is a diagram showing where each planet was positioned at the moment you were born, as seen from your birth location. It is computed from three inputs: your birth date, exact birth time, and birth city.
The chart uses the Whole Sign house system, where each house occupies exactly one zodiac sign. Your rising sign (Lagna) — the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth moment — becomes the 1st house, and the remaining signs fill the remaining houses in order.
Why exact birth time matters
The rising sign changes roughly every 2 hours. A difference of even 30 minutes can shift your entire chart layout — planets move into different houses, and the interpretation changes significantly.
This is why Vedic astrology asks for your exact birth time, not just the date. The more precise the time, the more accurate the chart. Birth certificates or hospital records are the best sources.
The nine planets
Vedic astrology uses nine celestial bodies — the seven visible planets plus the two lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu), which are the points where the Moon’s orbit intersects the ecliptic.

Three chart styles
The same chart data can be drawn in three traditional styles. All three show the same information — the difference is purely visual.
North Indian
Diamond-shaped layout popular in North India. Houses are fixed in position — the Lagna sign rotates.
South Indian
Grid layout popular in South India. Signs are fixed in position — the Lagna house is marked.
Wheel
Circular layout similar to Western charts. Shows the zodiac as a continuous ring with planet positions.
