What is Vedic astrology?

A 5,000-year-old timing system rooted in real planetary positions. Astronomy first, interpretation second.

The science of light

The Sanskrit word Jyotish translates to “science of light” or “science of celestial luminaries.” It originated in the Vedic period of India and was recorded in texts dating back thousands of years. Unlike popular horoscopes, Jyotish begins with precise astronomical computation — the actual, measurable positions of planets against the fixed stars.

At its core, Vedic astrology is a timing system. It answers the question: when is the right moment for something — not who you are in some fixed, unchangeable way.

Astronomy first

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which aligns signs with the actual constellations in the sky. This differs from the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology, which is tied to the seasons. Over the centuries, the two systems have drifted apart by about 23 degrees — a shift caused by the Earth’s axial precession.

Modern Vedic computations rely on the Swiss Ephemeris — the same astronomical engine used by observatories — to calculate precise planetary longitudes. Every planet position you see in a Vedic chart is a real, verifiable astronomical coordinate.

This is not fortune-telling

Jyotish does not predict the future. It identifies rhythms — periods when certain energies are stronger or weaker, when effort tends to flow or meet resistance. Think of it as a weather forecast for your personal energy, not a crystal ball.

Classical texts describe planetary periods and transits as influences, not commands. You always have agency. The timing system simply helps you understand when to lean in and when to pause.

The classical texts

Vedic astrology is grounded in a library of classical texts written over three millennia. These are not vague spiritual writings — they contain specific rules, tables, and scoring systems for planetary evaluation.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra

The foundational text. Attributed to sage Parashara, covering chart construction, planetary dignity, Dashas, and compatibility.

Phala Deepika

A practical guide to transit effects and planetary results in houses and signs.

Muhurta Chintamani

The authoritative text on electional timing — choosing the right moment for important actions.

Saravali

Detailed planetary combinations and their effects, attributed to Kalyana Varma.

Key concepts at a glance

Rashi (signs)

The 12 zodiac signs, aligned to actual constellations using the Lahiri ayanamsa correction.

Graha (planets)

Nine celestial bodies: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, plus the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.

Bhava (houses)

12 houses representing different areas of life — career, relationships, health, finances, and more.

Nakshatra (lunar mansions)

27 divisions of the sky, each spanning 13.3 degrees. A finer layer of meaning beyond the 12 signs.

Dasha (life chapters)

A system of planetary periods that maps life into chapters of varying length, governed by different planets.

Yoga (combinations)

Specific planetary alignments that create recognizable patterns — for wealth, leadership, wisdom, and more.
